I guess we know what a billion dollars, 10 years of planning and a world-renowned architect won’t buy: common sense. The Getty planners based their attendance projections (April 30) on their experience in Malibu? Hello? If you create an attraction that’s been anticipated around the world for a decade, place it in West L.A. within easy reach of buses, taxis, hiking and biking, and then advertise it with banners on every boulevard in town, people are going to come.
It’s not just another art museum. Even those who have no interest in art are going to flock there for the architecture, the views, the sheer event of it. (What got my 5-year-old excited was the tram ride--and he’s not alone!)
And while they’re back at the drawing board, how about a nice, wide pedestrian pathway up the hill? Walking up is a wonderful way to approach the museum, and anything would be a big improvement on the narrow sidewalk next to the service road that is currently the only way get in by foot.
