Pat Versluis
Saddleback, Sophomore
Baseball
Versluis, from Capistrano Valley High, was a key reliever and starter in the regional playoffs. He escaped a bases-loaded situation with a comebacker to start a game-ending double play in a 6-3 victory Saturday over Cerritos. He then pitched seven innings Sunday, giving up two runs, as the Gauchos beat Cerritos, 11-2, to reach the state tournament.
Track and Field
Roger Vansluis
* Santa Ana, sophomore. He tied the school’s pole vault record at 16 feet to finish second at the state meet.
Michele Bailon
Cypress, Sophomore
Softball
Bailon, from Santa Fe Springs St. Paul High, capped her season by being selected the Chargers’ most valuable player in the state tournament. She was seven for 15 in the tournament as Cypress won its second consecutive state title. Bailon had a run-scoring single to break a 1-1 tie in the sixth inning as Cypress beat Sacramento, 4-1, in the winners’ bracket final.
Softball
Crystal Aguirre
* Fullerton, freshman. She was four for 12 and threw out four runners attempting to steal as the Hornets finished fourth in the state tournament.
