Davis (23 Kills) Leads Newbury Park Upset of No. 1 San Marcos

Newbury Park High upset top-seeded San Marcos, 15-10, 15-7, 13-15, 15-2, in a Southern Section Division II boys’ volleyball quarterfinal match Thursday night at San Marcos.

Mark Davis delivered 23 kills and Robert Congelliere, who has committed to Brigham Young University, had 15 kills for Newbury Park (20-5).

San Marcos middle blocker Brook Billings, one of the top seniors in the nation, did not play.

Billings, who has committed to USC, was injured in a campus altercation Wednesday and did not suit up for the Royals (15-3).

John Enke had 12 kills and 10 blocks for unseeded Newbury Park, which finished second in the Marmonte League.

Newbury Park will play the winner of tonight’s Dos Pueblos-Servite match in a semifinal Wednesday at a site to be determined.

Jordan McOwen led San Marcos with 18 kills and four blocks.

In another match:

Campbell Hall def. San Marino, 15-7, 16-14, 15-7--UCLA-bound middle blocker Larry Cole collected 23 kills, four blocks and seven digs and the Vikings (17-1) swept to a Division III quarterfinal victory at San Marino.

Campbell Hall won the second game despite trailing most of the way. The game was tied at 7-7 and 10-10 before the Vikings fell behind, 13-10, and then rallied.

Senior outside hitter Jeff Erb had 12 kills and opposite hitter Jon Drexler added 11 kills and 14 digs. Setter Tanner Ragland had 46 assists.

San Marinio (14-3) got 18 kills and nine digs by outside hitter Vincent Huang, and Jeremiah Murray added 11 kills.

Campbell Hall plays the winner of tonight’s match between Santa Ynez and Brentwood in the semifinals on Wednesday.
