Ventura County Sheriff Larry Carpenter has been named grand marshal of the 1998 Ventura County Fair Parade, officials said Friday.
Carpenter will preside Aug. 8 over the parade on Main Street through downtown Ventura. Last year’s parade drew an estimated 30,000 spectators, officials said.
“With Sheriff Carpenter’s upcoming retirement, this is an opportunity for us to honor him for his many accomplishments and his dedication to the citizens of Ventura County,” fair board President Georgia Mahan said.
Carpenter, a Fillmore native, began his law enforcement career in 1965 as an officer for the Fillmore Police Department. In 1969, he transferred to the Ventura County Sheriff’s Department and was appointed sheriff in 1993.
He is a member of the county’s American Red Cross chapter, the local council of the Boy Scouts of America and is on the board of the Moorpark Boys & Girls Club.
This year’s fair opens Aug. 5 and continues through Aug. 16 at Seaside Park in Ventura.
