A Santa Ana police officer fatally shot a man in the chest during a confrontation Monday, police said.
The unidentified officer told supervisors that he was cruising the 800 block of West Richland Street in his police car about 4:15 p.m. when his attention “was drawn to two males,” Lt. Robert Chavez said, and the officer tried to talk to them.
Details of what happened next were not released. But Chavez said the officer fired once, hitting one of the men in the chest.
Only the officer fired, but investigators found a shotgun at the scene, believed to have been carried by the wounded man, Chavez said.
The injured man, who paramedics said was in his mid-20s, was taken to Western Medical Center in Santa Ana, where he later died.
The shooting is under investigation by Santa Ana police and the Orange County district attorney.
