Jewish Settlers Win E. Jerusalem Presence

After days of skirmishes, Jewish settlers won the right to maintain a presence on land they took over illegally in an Arab neighborhood of East Jerusalem. In a deal arranged by Cabinet minister Ariel Sharon, eight families who belong to the Ateret Cohanim settlement group agreed to leave the area and dismantle makeshift homes they had erected there. Jewish seminary students were to guard the site until the Israeli antiquity authority assumes control.
