Von Furstenberg Yarn Wraps It Up

She married a prince in the ‘60s, became the darling of fashion in the ‘70s, escaped to Bali in the ‘80s and reclaimed control of her name and her company in the ‘90s.

Now, at 50, Diane Von Furstenberg provides a look into her life in the fast lane in “Diane: A Signature Life” (Simon & Schuster, $25). Peppered with juicy anecdotes and peopled with famous figures, the book is part autobiography, part business memoir and part guide to life.

Von Furstenberg reinvented herself dozens of times, but the common thread in her life is undoubtedly “The Dress,” and it’s a pleasure to see her use it as a device throughout the book. She writes: “The dresses had lunch at La Grenouille, they walked up and down Madison Avenue, they were outside prep schools . . . they went into office buildings and out to dinner.”

And later in life, marketing the wrap dress to a new generation of women, she reflects on the pictures women show her of themselves in their dresses 20 years earlier: “Whether they looked good or not, they had changed, and so had I.”
