So what if it was Servite’s field, on Servite’s homecoming night? The Westminster football team took a group photo anyway, right on the 30-yard line.

After upsetting the Golden West League-leading Friars, 34-23, Friday night at Cal State Fullerton, 34 beaming Westminster players felt they earned it.

Westminster quarterback Kelly Coburn completed 14 of 22 passes for 299 yards and three touchdowns and the Lions intercepted Servite’s Dan Petropulos five times.

“We made big plays tonight,” said Westminster Coach Ted McMillen. “Something we haven’t been able to do for a few years. That got us in the game. Then our defense started to believe in themselves.”

At the least, the Lions (4-5, 2-2) believed they could break down Servite’s secondary and wreak havoc with their own.

Coburn completed eight passes for 13 yards or more, including touchdown strikes of 62, 13 and 54 yards.

The Lions picked off Petropulos’ first pass and his first two attempts in the third quarter.

“It’s amazing,” said defensive back Phillip Jenkins, who had two of the interceptions. “We did so well. That was our goal this year, just to beat Servite.”

Westminster must beat Tustin next week to qualify for the playoffs.

Servite fell to 4-5, 3-1 in league.
