German Monument

Your Nov. 10 article reports that some Germans are not enthusiastic about [plans for] a “huge swath of central Berlin to be covered with 10-foot-high concrete slabs reminiscent of tombstones” to remind the population of the Nazi atrocities. I wonder how we would react if Indians demanded a swath of tomb-like monuments through New York City or Washington to remind us of the genocide of the American Indians?
How about a swath of monuments through London for the colonial massacres of Irish, Indians, Boers, etc. A swath through Moscow for Stalin’s murder of 20 million people. A swath through Tokyo for Nanking and other systematic murders in World War II, or through Istanbul or Ankara for the Armenian genocide. The list unfortunately goes on and on. Why single out Berlin?
