Bus Hits Boulder, Crashes Near Truckee; 16 Go to Hospital

TRUCKEE, Calif. — Sixteen people were sent to the hospital after a charter bus hit a boulder and crashed Sunday on Interstate 80 near here.
The California Highway Patrol said the 8:40 a.m. collision with the boulder caused the westbound bus to veer off the roadway, hit a rock embankment and roll onto its side.
Driver Michael Collins, 52, of San Francisco, and 15 of the 27 passengers were treated for minor injuries at Tahoe-Forest Hospital in Truckee and released.
The bus--a Mike Lee Tours “gamblers’ special” operated by Quo Vadis Tour Line of San Francisco--was returning to Sacramento and the Bay Area from a junket to Reno. Investigators said alcohol and excessive speed did not appear to be factors in the accident.
The CHP said two boulders had been on the roadway for about 15 minutes when the bus hit one of them.
