Ad Spending Was Up 8.3% Last Year

Ad spending grew by 8.3% in 1998, the smallest percentage gain since 1991, according to Competitive Media Reporting. Electronics and electrical components showed the biggest growth (up 1,238%). Women’s health-care products showed the biggest decline (42.3%). General Motors was the biggest advertiser, spending $2.1 billion, a 4.7% decrease from 1997.
