DODGERS’ KEVIN BROWN
(18-7, 2.38 ERA)
vs.
DIAMONDBACKS’ RANDY JOHNSON
(19-11, 3.28 ERA)
* Update--Brown and Johnson were among the biggest winners in the off-season free-agent market, signing contracts worth more than $105 million and $52 million, respectively. The all-stars last faced each other in Game 1 of the 1998 National League division series, when Brown was with the San Diego Padres and Johnson with the Houston Astros. Brown defeated the Astros and Johnson, 2-1, striking out 16. The Padres won the best-of-five series, 3-1, winning both games in which Brown started, 2-1. Brown was 2-1 with a 3.42 earned-run average in six spring training starts, striking out 18 in 23 2/3 innings. Johnson was 1-0 with a 3.46 ERA and 16 strikeouts in the spring. Arizona officials considered scratching Johnson from today’s game because he had been slowed by a mild groin strain, recently missing a start.
