Way Paved for Vote on Community Center Tax

The Board of Education on Tuesday unanimously approved creating a special bond district to fund a $2.1-million, 8,000-square-foot multipurpose room at Mount Washington Elementary School.

Honoring the late Jack Smith, the popular Los Angeles Times columnist who lived in and wrote about Mt. Washington, the multipurpose room would open its library, assembly area and gymnasium to the community as well as students.

“We’re now moving forward,” said Warren Christensen, who has advocated building the center for more than six years. “There’s a consensus in the community, too.”

The special tax bonds, called Mello-Roos bonds, tax all homeowners within school borders, which would include the entire Mt. Washington community. The bond requires voter approval.

A public hearing will be held Jan. 25, and the issue could go before voters in the spring.
