Councilman Tom Potocki died late Tuesday of cancer at 53.
Potocki served as a member of the City Council for three years, was a Planning Commissioner for the city and served as president of the Mission Viejo Kiwanis Club until earlier this year. He was reelected mayor pro tem, a ceremonial post, by his fellow council members earlier this month.
Potocki was diagnosed with esophageal cancer in late October and continued to serve on the City Council while undergoing chemotherapy. He participated in the Dec. 6 meeting of the City Council from his home via teleconferencing.
Potocki is survived by his wife, Kay, and two children, Mike Potocki and Derry Ruyle.
A memorial service will be held at 5 p.m. today at St. Kilian Catholic Church, 26872 Estanciero Drive, Mission Viejo.
