Sanchez’s Goal Lifts Buena Over Simi Valley

Melissa Sanchez scored a goal with four minutes left to give Buena High a 1-0 victory over Simi Valley in a nonleague girls’ soccer game Monday at Simi Valley.
It was the second victory in a row for Buena (11-2-1) since a 2-1 loss to Westlake in the semifinals of the Simi Valley tournament on Dec. 22.
Both teams failed to score on superb opportunities.
Natalie Sanderson and Ashley Garmon of Buena failed to convert on breakaways, as did Gina Bova and Mindy Gondrez of Simi Valley (8-4-1).
BOYS’ SOCCER
St. Francis 4, Harvard-Westlake 1--Ryan Shaw scored two goals to help the Golden Knights in a Mission League opener at St. Francis.
Shaw gave St. Francis (8-3-3) a 1-0 lead 10 minutes into the game and made the score 2-0 five minutes into the second half.
St. Francis extended its lead to 3-0 on a goal by Rey Hernandez before Matt Thayer scored for Harvard-Westlake (7-6), the defending league co-champion with Loyola.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Pierce 70, Santa Monica 58--Claudia Villa had 20 points and 14 rebounds for Pierce (5-8) in a Western State Conference South Division opener at Santa Monica (4-7).
