Newport Harbor, Corona del Mar Tied; Mater Dei Leads Large Schools
- Share via
The fall sports season has concluded and the points have been totaled toward the sixth annual Times Orange County All-Sports Award, given at the end of the school year to the large- and small-school winners.
Mater Dei is in the lead among large schools and rivals Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar are tied for the lead in the small-school division.
The All-Sports Award rewards schools that have the county’s most successful overall athletic programs. The Times’ scoring format awards points only for a team’s playoff participation and finish. Thus, field hockey programs can’t earn points because they do not have section-sanctioned playoffs.
Under the format, 20 points are awarded for winning a section title, 16 for finishing as a runner-up, 12 for reaching the semifinals, eight for reaching the quarterfinals and four for qualifying for the playoffs.
Mater Dei climbed to the top with 56 points thanks in large part to section titles in football and girls’ tennis.
Woodbridge rode the success of its section Division VI championship football team and strong performances from girls’ tennis and girls’ cross-country to a total of 52 points and second place among the large schools.
Newport Harbor won a section title in girls’ volleyball and got a second-place finish from the boys’ cross-country team in the section finals for a total of 60 points.
Sea View League rival Corona del Mar, which also scored 60 points, benefited most from a section title in girls’ cross-country but received points from all its fall sports teams.
Servite/Rosary, which has won the past two small-school All-Sports Award titles, is third with 56 points.
Santa Margarita, the three-time defending large-school champion, is competing in the small-school division this year because its enrollment dropped to 1,294 (excluding freshmen). The Eagles, with a section championship in girls’ volleyball, are third with 48 points.
