Fire Season Not Yet Over, Officials Say

A lack of rainfall in the county has forced fire officials to extend the official fire season beyond the normal ending date in mid-November.

Fire season this year started June 1 and was supposed to end Monday, but will be extended indefinitely until most of the county has received at least 2 inches of rain, said Joe Luna, a Ventura County Fire Department spokesman.

To date, most of the county has received about an inch since the start of the rainy season Oct. 1. Fire officials said more precipitation was forecast early next week for throughout the county.

“We will monitor the weather and once we get enough rain the season will end,” Luna said.

So far, the fire season has been mild, officials said. The largest fire was the Holser Canyon fire in July, which burned 2,100 acres of brush near Lake Piru.
