SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO

The City Council is scheduled to vote today on a plan to increase water rates 1% a year to upgrade existing facilities and build new wells.
The current cost is $1.23 per 100 cubic feet of water, which is equivalent to 748 gallons of water. The proposed increase would add a penny to that rate.
The average San Juan Capistrano household, which uses 12,716 gallons of water per month, would see an increase from $27 to $27.33 per month.
The increase would take effect next month.
City officials said the increase should generate about $12 million to help offset the estimated $27-million cost of capital improvements and maintenance.
