SANTA BARBARA — Clark Goodwin blocked a 32-yard field-goal attempt with 44 seconds remaining and Ventura High stayed unbeaten with a 7-6 Channel League victory over host San Marcos on Friday.
Ventura (6-0, 1-0) struggled on offense for most of the night and needed big plays on defense to hold off the Royals (3-3, 0-1).
Running back Tyler Ebell scored the game’s only touchdown for the Cougars, a seven-yard run that capped a seven-play, 80-yard drive with 1:21 left in the second quarter.
It was Ventura’s only sustained drive in the game.
Ebell, who entered with 732 yards rushing, was held to a season-low 54 yards in 13 carries, the second consecutive game he was kept under 100 yards.
The Cougars were limited to 23 yards and just two first downs in the second half.
San Marcos failed to find the end zone on two long drives, settling for field goals of 28 and 34 yards by Spencer Schomer.
Carlos Santana of San Marcos rushed for 114 yards in 17 carries.
