OUTLOOK
Stern (Pacifica High) threw for 1,669 yards and 12 touchdowns last season but had shoulder surgery after the season. Lamar, who moved over from Santa Ana College, ran the team in the spring. But Stern, who is healthy again, won the job back over the last month. Zaragoza (Magnolia High) ran the option in high school and gives the Rustlers an added dimension. Golden West gave up nearly 500 yards a game last season, but Shaughnessy hopes better players and a switch to the flex defense can lower that number. The offensive line is big but the numbers are thin and “you can’t practice like you would like with low numbers,” Shaughnessy said. No team in Southern California will play a more difficult schedule the first six weeks than the Rustlers, who for the second year in a row don’t play rival Orange Coast.
