Doheny Days Mixes It Up With Alterna-Rock, Reggae
- Share via
Doheny Days started in 1997 as a seaside clambake of a summer’s-end rock festival in which a little of this and a little of that, ranging from blues and oldies to alterna-rock, got thrown into the pot. This year’s third edition, at Doheny State Beach in Dana Point, dishes up two entirely different kettles of fish.
Saturday’s 12-band bill is for the adrenaline set, with its nine hours of mostly aggressive alterna-rock and hip-hop. X, Reverend Horton Heat and Unwritten Law top the show, which also features a class reunion of sorts for O.C. grass-roots bands that have graduated to major labels: Reel Big Fish, Kottonmouth Kings, (hed)p.e., Dial-7 and Mr. Mirainga.
The cooler stream of the reggae sound takes over Sunday, as Doheny Days presents a self-contained, traveling package show, the Teva Spirit of Unity tour, with Steel Pulse, Eek-A-Mouse, Third World, Maxi Priest and Culture topping the dozen-act bill. Along with their price discount, fans who buy a two-day pass should get a gold star for eclectic taste.
