George Thiemeyer Hemmeter, 94, inventor of the newspaper vending machine. A prolific inventor, Hemmeter came up with the idea for the ubiquitous coin-operated newspaper “boxes,” now found on every street corner, in 1947. Among his other inventions were a food dehydrator used during World War II and a self-balancing washing machine. His son Chris became a major Hawaii developer. On Saturday in Honolulu.
