The Newport Beach Public Library may get a refund thanks to a $15.5-million multistate settlement with a book distributor.
North Carolina-based Baker & Taylor Inc. and its former owner, W.R. Grace & Co., were taken to court over allegations that they intentionally overcharged school and public libraries for books.
The settlement, which was announced last week by state Atty. Gen. Bill Lockyer, gives $4 million to California, $3 million to the federal government and the remaining $8.5 million to the rest of the participants.
Newport Beach Public Library is one of more than 50 organizations in the state that have submitted claims and are expected to receive funds.
