Firefighters Contain 2 Brush Fires Near Homes

Two small brush fires on opposite ends of the Valley briefly threatened homes Friday afternoon before firefighters doused the flames, a Fire Department spokesman said.
Shortly before 1 p.m., a three-acre blaze raced up a Sun Valley hillside near the 8300 block of Echelon Place, said Jim Wells of the Los Angeles Fire Department.
About 60 firefighters initially had trouble containing the fire, but two water-dropping helicopters helped them bring it to heel, Wells said. Residents watered down their roofs as a precaution, but the flames were blown away from the structures.
Another brush fire broke out about 5:10 p.m. at the northern end of Topanga Canyon Boulevard in Chatsworth, near the Ronald Reagan Freeway. It took 150 firefighters and four helicopters to defeat the 10-acre blaze, which came close to a few homes, Wells said.
No structures were damaged and no one was hurt in either incident. The cause of both fires is under investigation, Wells said.
