President Announces Amnesty for 30,647

In a sweeping amnesty ordered by South Korean President Kim Dae Jung, 3,586 inmates will be released today, the anniversary of Korea’s liberation from Japanese colonial rule Aug. 15, 1945, government officials said. They are among 30,647 people who will benefit from the amnesty. A total of 23,730 people who are already out of prison after punishment for minor economic and other offenses will have their civil rights reinstated.
