Sandra Castillo, a Mission Viejo High School senior, was honored by the City Council on Monday night for her efforts to save a dying man in early September.
Castillo, an aspiring nurse, saw the man collapse from a heart attack in a Costco Wholesale store. She performed CPR for about five minutes until paramedics arrived. “At first, I didn’t realize I was doing it,” she said.
Castillo momentarily revived the man, but he died later in the hospital.
Castillo learned CPR during a medical nursing class at El Toro High School. She has also volunteered at a convalescent home.
