Re “Bogota Mayor Bans Private Cars for a Day,” Feb. 25: What a treat to see the photo of all the Bogota bicyclists! With L.A.’s cycling Mayor Richard Riordan and our smog and congestion problems, we should do something like their “Day Without a Car” experiment here. We probably couldn’t go completely car-free, but perhaps have a bike-to-work event with some streets designated bike-only during commute hours.

We need to think of realistic goals for easing congestion on our roads in Southern California. My proposal is, let’s stop all subway and other transportation projects. Take that money and offer large monetary incentives to employers who hire employees who live within 10 miles of the workplace. Also, offer the same incentive to employees who work within 10 miles of their homes. If that works, we will have roads freed up for bikes and buses without any additional costs.
