Good Samaritan to Be Honored Tonight

A man who helped rescue a woman from her burning condominium last month will be honored at tonight’s City Council meeting.

Michael Malloy, whom Ventura County Fire Department officials say dragged 42-year-old Belinda Tristan to safety from her burning home, will receive a certificate of commendation from the city.

Malloy was doing some work on a friend’s door near Tristan’s condo in the 2000 block of Avenida Refugio just after 9 a.m. Sept. 30 when he heard neighbors yelling that there was a fire in her home, fire department officials said.

Malloy, a carpenter, kicked in Tristan’s door, saw her crying for help in her living room and took her outside to safety, officials said.

“There are not a lot of people that will put their own health and well-being aside to step forward for somebody else, whether you know them or don’t know them,” said Donna Page, a friend of Tristan’s.

The Simi Valley council will meet at 6:30 p.m. at City Hall, 2929 Tapo Canyon Road.

Tristan, who lived in her condo for about two years, remains in critical condition at County-USC Medical Center’s burn intensive care unit in Los Angeles, said Adelaida De La Cerda, a hospital spokeswoman. Tristan had second- and third-degree burns on about 42% of her body, De La Cerda said.

Earlier this month, friends and family set up a fund at Camarillo Community Bank to assist Tristan with her medical bills and home-repair costs.
