An 83-year-old former Nazi SS commander was convicted of killing seven Jewish prisoners during World War II and sentenced to 12 years in prison.
Julius Viel was put on trial in Ravensburg four decades after German authorities first investigated the case and dropped it. The case was revived when a former subordinate provided new evidence.
Prosecutors had sought a life sentence, saying Viel shot the inmates from the Theresienstadt concentration camp in Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia in 1945. Viel had bitterly contested the charges.
