EL CENTRO, Calif. — One man died Monday when a pickup truck with 24 illegal immigrants on board overturned on a rural highway near the U.S.-Mexico border.
The pickup was heading the wrong way with its headlights off just before 1 a.m. on Interstate 8 when the driver lost control, said California Highway Patrol Officer Jose Salazar.
A 42-year-old man from the southwestern Mexican state of Guerrero died in the crash. The other 23 people suffered minor injuries and were treated at local hospitals.
Authorities were unable to determine who was driving the pickup or what caused it to crash about five miles east of the Imperial County city of El Centro.
Authorities said 22 of those in the truck were illegal immigrants from Mexico. Two others were from Brazil.
