Error-Prone Fullerton Loses at Home to BYU, 8-2

Nate Fernley allowed two runs in the first inning but shut down Cal State Fullerton the rest of the way as Brigham Young defeated the Titans, 8-2, Friday night at Fullerton.
Fernley pitched a seven-hitter, striking out six and walking one, to improve his record to 5-0. He did not allow a hit over the final four innings.
Matt Carson gave Brigham Young (7-5) a 2-0 lead in the first with a two-run homer. Cal State Fullerton (5-6) tied the score in the bottom of the inning when Robert Guzman singled in David Bacani and Mike Rouse doubled home Guzman.
BYU took advantage of a passed ball and two errors by shortstop Rouse to take the lead for good in the sixth. The Titans committed a season-high four errors.
In other nonconference games:
CS Dominguez Hills 15, Concordia 0--Steve Hindman had five hits, including a double and two-run home run, and Pat Meras hit a grand slam for Dominguez Hills (2-3). Nick Swanson and Jim Stolberg had two hits each for host Concordia (4-2-1).
Chapman 7, Cal Lutheran 2--Andy Karp’s three-run homer in the second inning powered visiting Chapman (2-3). Andrew Tisdale struck out seven and walked two over seven innings to pick up his first victory of the season.
In Big West Conference women’s basketball:
UC Irvine 69, Cal Poly SLO 63--Cindy Oparah and Wendy Gabbe each scored 15 points for visiting Irvine (13-13, 4-7). Odessa Jenkins led all scorers with 26 points for Cal Poly (9-13, 3-6).
In Big West women’s tennis:
UC Irvine 4, Long Beach State 3--Jonni Seymour swept, 6-2, 6-0, at No. 1 singles and combined with Darian Chappell to win, 8-2, at No. 1 doubles for visiting Irvine.
