Police arrested a burglary suspect after he led them on a late-night pursuit that started near Ventura College and ended when his car rolled in an intersection while making a left turn, authorities said.
Cortez Swanigan, 26, of Ventura was booked on suspicion of burglary, evading police and violating parole after the chase, which started about 11 p.m. Friday on Victoria Avenue, Lt. Bryan Roberts said.
A 16-year-old Oxnard girl who was a passenger in the car refused treatment for a minor hand injury and was released after being questioned by police, Roberts said.
An off-duty Ventura police sergeant was walking his dog near the college when he saw a man attempting to break into a car in the campus parking lot. Roberts said the man saw the officer and sped out of the parking lot.
Ventura police began their pursuit after the sergeant called in a description of the car.
Swanigan led officers on a pursuit southbound on Victoria Avenue until he lost control of his sport utility vehicle at Ralston Street, Roberts said. Swanigan fled on foot but was caught by officers, Roberts said.
