Sobriety Checkpoint Has a Busy Evening

Six people were arrested on suspicion of drunk driving Friday evening after police erected a sobriety checkpoint.
Irvine police also ticketed 42 people for allegedly driving with invalid drivers licenses. Eight drivers had their vehicles towed.
The checkpoint was on Irvine Center Drive east of Bake Parkway. Police and volunteers from organizations such as Mothers Against Drunk Driving stopped 640 vehicles of 1,907 that drove through the checkpoint.
According to MADD, communities that consistently use sobriety checkpoints can see a decrease in drunk-driving accidents.
Earlier this year, Irvine police and 15 other law enforcement agencies decided to use more checkpoints under the direction of a newly formed task force designed to decrease drunk-driving accidents in Orange County. Funding comes from the California Office of Traffic Safety.
