State Republicans Select Gubernatorial Candidate

Virginia Republicans tapped Atty. Gen. Mark Earley at their nominating convention to square off against telecommunications millionaire Mark Warner, a Democrat, in the race for governor, one of only two state gubernatorial elections this year.
Earley, who was nominated by acclamation after outpolling his chief rival, Lt. Gov. John Hager, a retired tobacco company executive, at the convention in Richmond, said the election would be a key test for Republicans a year into President Bush’s first term.
