RU-486 Abortion Pill Gains Wider Support

“RU-486 Abortion Pill Hasn’t Caught on in U.S.” (May 31) presents a picture very different from what our experience has been nationally. Women have clearly expressed an interest in this option. Since the FDA’s approval, our toll-free abortion hotline has been flooded with calls from women seeking more information about this safe, early abortion option.
Doctors have also expressed a real interest in offering mifepristone. Over the past year and a half, the National Abortion Federation has educated close to 3,000 health-care professionals (many of whom do not perform surgical abortions) in the administration of mifepristone. Half of our member clinics are currently offering this option, and each week more are adding it to the services they provide.
We have stated consistently that mifepristone would initially be available through current abortion providers and that over time other physicians would add it to the services they offer.
