A 1-year-old girl who fell out of a second-story window Saturday onto a sidewalk in Newport Beach got off with barely a scratch.
Lily Olson had just arrived with her parents from Salt Lake City, Utah, when the accident occurred about 1:30 p.m. at a vacation rental in the 2000 block of Court Street.
Her mother, Suzi, had put her and a sibling in an upstairs bedroom while the couple unloaded their luggage, according to Sgt. Mike McDermott, a spokesman for the Police Department. Unbeknown to the parents, a window overlooking the street had a sill just six inches above the floor.
“Apparently the child leaned against the screen, the screen popped out and she hit the ground and started crying,” McDermott said.
A police officer, who was driving by at the time, saw the girl fall and came to her aid. She was taken to Western Medical Center-Santa Ana, where she was reported in good condition with only minor scrapes on her knee, though doctors said they would keep her there overnight for observation.
“She is a very lucky little girl . . . either that or very bouncy,” McDermott said.
