Homeowners confounded by property tax obligations and disclosure requirements can get information by visiting a new Web site devoted to such issues.
National Tax Data Inc., at https://www.californiataxdata.com, offers information about Mello-Roos taxing districts and other levies above the usual 1%.
For example, a property valued at $300,000 and taxed at 2% because of Mello-Roos or other special assessments can cost a home buyer $90,000 more over 30 years than a property assessed at the commonly quoted 1% levy.
Free general information is available at the Web site; prospective home buyers can purchase reports for $10 that detail approximately how much they will pay in property taxes.
Information about buyers’ and sellers’ disclosure requirements also is available for a fee.
