Alcohol might have played a role in the one-car crash early Monday that left Rancho Cucamonga Quakes infielder Josh Shaffer with fractured ribs and a punctured lung, Anaheim police said Tuesday.

“It is believed that alcohol may have been a contributing factor,” Anaheim Police Lt. Joe Vargas said. Shaffer was taken to UCI Medical Center in Orange, where he remained Tuesday. A hospital spokeswoman said Shaffer is listed in fair condition and all vital signs are stable. No charges have been filed against Shaffer, though the investigation is ongoing and a blood test is pending, police said. He turns 21 on June 26. Shaffer, a 26th-round selection in the 1999 amateur draft, is the son of Duane Shaffer, the White Sox’s senior scouting director.
