Panel Supports Argyros for Ambassadorship

The Senate Foreign Relations Committee on Wednesday unanimously approved Orange County businessman George L. Argyros as ambassador to Spain, sending the nomination to the full Senate.
A committee official said a Senate vote is likely by mid-December.
Also Wednesday, Gaddi H. Vasquez, a former Orange County supervisor, told the committee that as Peace Corps director he would expand opportunities for Americans to volunteer for service abroad.
Vasquez’s nomination is strongly opposed by some former Peace Corps volunteers, who say the agency director should have overseas experience. A bipartisan group of congressional members from California, however, backs Vasquez’s nomination, which appears likely to be confirmed.
