A volunteer firefighter who battled blazes in the San Diego area and traveled to New York to help rescue workers at the World Trade Center has been arrested on suspicion of fraud.
Jeff Duffett, 34, was also arrested on suspicion of having materials used for identity theft and impersonating a firefighter, Los Angeles police said.
Acting on a tip, police reportedly found counterfeit Social Security cards and stolen credit cards and medical identification in the North Hollywood home of Duffett’s mother. Police said some of the items had been taken in a Nov. 1 car burglary in Burbank and a Nov. 7 burglary in Beverly Hills.
Police also confiscated a red Ford Explorer that Duffett drove to fire emergencies while serving as a volunteer with the Intermountain Rescue Squad in San Diego County.
