Driver Hospitalized After Freeway Shooting

Police are seeking witnesses to an attempted homicide that occurred about 11:20 p.m. Saturday on the southbound Costa Mesa Freeway near the San Diego Freeway.
Authorities say a blue or other dark-colored Ford Expedition or Chevy Blazer pulled alongside a 1997 white Nissan Pathfinder and fired into the driver’s side with a handgun. The driver was struck and began to lose consciousness, but the passenger helped control the Pathfinder and stopped it on the Costa Mesa Freeway near Bay Street, police said.
The driver remains hospitalized in serious condition. The passenger was not injured. Both had been to a party in Santa Ana before the shooting and police believe the incident could be gang-related.
Anyone with information is asked to contact Costa Mesa Police Detective Bob Fate, (714) 754-5313.
