Conservative Parties Dissolve Their Coalition

Divisions on Canada’s political right became more entrenched with the collapse of a coalition in Parliament and the failure of the two main conservative parties to agree to stop fighting each other in the next election.
Vote-splitting between the Progressive Conservative Party and the more conservative Canadian Alliance helped Prime Minister Jean Chretien’s Liberals cruise to victory in the 2000 general election.
On Wednesday, a handful of disgruntled Alliance members formally ended the coalition they had formed in the House of Commons with the Progressive Conservative Party.
