Hahn Seeks Anti-Blight Funding

Los Angeles Mayor James K. Hahn on Monday unveiled another piece of his proposed city budget for next year, saying he wants to maintain full funding for two existing initiatives designed to reduce blight in neighborhoods.
Hahn said he has set aside $3.6 million to pay for the neighborhood prosecutors program and an expansion of the citywide nuisance abatement program. The abatement program was started in the city attorney’s office while Hahn was city attorney.
Rocky Delgadillo, the current city attorney, began the neighborhood prosecutors program this year. Under it, prosecutors are assigned to each LAPD division to target recurring problems such as vandalism, drug use and other criminal behavior.
“Neighborhood prosecutors are going to provide those additional eyes and ears, and more important, the follow-through that is often missing in government,” the mayor said during a news conference Monday in Watts.
Hahn’s complete 2002-03 proposed city budget will be released Friday. The City Council can review and modify the document.
