U.N. Cites $777-Million Shortfall for Afghans

GENEVA — The United Nations said Thursday that in order to carry out urgently needed reconstruction work in Afghanistan, it needs $777 million more this year.
Without the money, the Central Asian nation’s health and long-term development will be affected, said a report from the U.N. Assistance Mission to Afghanistan.
Almost a third of the population depends on some form of emergency assistance, said the report, presented to the Afghan Support Group of donor nations.
The appeal includes $214 million for food programs, $144 million to help refugees return and $125 million for health and nutrition.
