Smuggled African Ivory Was En Route to Japan

Six tons of smuggled African ivory intercepted in Singapore last month was headed for Japan for use in making hankos, or carved name stamps, officials said.
The illegal cargo--532 pieces of raw elephant tusk and about 40,180 ivory pieces--is worth about $850,000, Singapore’s Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority said in a news release.
The agency enforces an international agreement against the smuggling of wildlife species threatened with extinction.
