Floods and landslides have killed 46 Kenyans and injured eight others in the last two weeks, police said.
“Of the 46 dead, 15 died when landslides covered their homes [while] the others were drowned in the raging floods,” police spokesman Dola Indidis said. Kenyan charities and local media had put the death toll at between 20 and 30.
The Kenyan branch of the International Committee of the Red Cross said the floods forced up to 150,000 people to leave their homes, raising fears of a cholera outbreak as victims huddle in makeshift shelters.
The relief agency warned that flood victims were in urgent need of health and sanitation assistance to stave off the threat of waterborne diseases.
