From Times Staff and Wire Reports
Three energy companies that operated an oil platform from which tens of thousands of gallons of crude spewed in 1997 off the Santa Barbara County coast have agreed to pay the state and federal government $3 million to restore natural resources.
The spill a few miles off the coast near Vandenberg Air Force Base carpeted parts of 17 miles of coastline with oil. Hundreds of birds were injured or killed.
The three companies are Torch Energy Co., Nuevo Energy Co. and Black Hawk Oil & Gas Co.
