Jon Rubenstein and James Thayer swept at No. 1 doubles and second-seeded North Hollywood Harvard-Westlake edged fourth-seeded Brentwood on games, 75-69, to win the Southern Section Division V boys’ tennis title Wednesday at The Claremont Club.
Each team won nine sets, but when total games were counted, Harvard-Westlake (27-1) had captured its first section title since 1999.
“We knew it could go either way,” said senior Jesse Ferlianto, the No. 1 Wolverine singles player. “We figured if we could just get to nine, we’d have a chance, and that’s exactly how it turned out.”
Eric McKean swept at No.1 singles for Brentwood (17-5), which advanced to a final for the fifth consecutive year by upsetting top-seeded Corona del Mar in the semifinals. Ari Rosenthal won two singles sets for Brentwood, losing 6-1 to Ferlianto.
