Corona Might Seize Edison’s Power Lines
Frustrated with the high rates being charged by Southern California Edison Co., the city of Corona plans to try to take over the distribution of electricity within its boundaries by seizing control of power lines from the big utility.
A utility takeover would involve the city using its power of eminent domain to condemn at least a portion of Edison’s power lines and substations. If that works -- it probably would carry an enormous price tag -- Corona effectively would take control of power distribution within its city limits.
Edison vowed to go to court to block Corona’s plans and said the city can expect to rack up tens of millions of dollars in legal bills if it pursues the takeover.
