House Arrest Reported for N. Korea Zone Chief

China has placed Yang Bin, the controversial governor of North Korea’s fledgling economic zone, under house arrest in Shenyang after releasing him from detention, South Korea’s Yonhap news agency reported.
The agency also quoted Chinese sources as saying China had sent a vice minister-level official to North Korea to explain the Chinese-born Dutch citizen’s detention.
Yonhap quoted a Chinese source as saying Yang was unlikely to be allowed out of Shenyang anytime soon. Chinese police bundled away the chief executive of the new Sinuiju special administrative region Friday, fueling speculation that he had been picked up for failing to pay taxes.
